From 2008 to June 2013 the Ministry of Defence released its UFO files through the National Archives in ten tranches, 209 files and about 52,000 pages. In November 2009 the MoD closed its UFO desk and hotline, after reports jumped from 208 in 2008 to 643 in 2009 and ministers were told they had no defence value.
Why it matters (3/5)
Virtually all surviving British government UFO files made public over five years.
Caveats
David Clarke, who advised the National Archives on the release, describes the subject as a public-relations headache for the MoD. The official highlights guide was not opened.
