September 16, 1994 · Ariel School, Ruwa, Zimbabwe · Sighting · Secondary sources only
On 16 September 1994, during break time at Ariel School in Ruwa, near Harare, more than sixty pupils aged six to twelve said objects came down near the school and humanoid figures appeared, and some described wordless messages about pollution. BBC journalist Tim Leach arrived on 19 September and researcher Cynthia Hind collected interviews and drawings. Harvard psychiatrist John Mack interviewed about a dozen children in December.
Why it matters (3/5)
A widely cited mass-witness account by children, investigated by a Harvard psychiatrist and the BBC.
Caveats
Brian Dunning links lights seen across southern Africa on 14 September to a Zenit-2 rocket re-entry; others suggest mass hysteria or a prank. A former pupil reportedly said he made it up, which is unverified. The environmental messages appear mainly in later interviews.
