A wave of triangle sightings in Belgium includes an F-16 scramble

November 29, 1989 – April 1990 · Belgium (Eupen to Brussels region) · Sighting · Secondary sources only

On a November 1989 night near Eupen, two policemen on patrol reported a large object with lights, and dozens of other groups reported it that night. About 2,000 sightings of lit triangles followed through April 1990. On 30 March 1990 two Belgian Air Force F-16s chased radar targets that seemed to jump huge distances in seconds, but the pilots never saw anything. A US Embassy memo said no US stealth aircraft were operating in the area.

Why it matters (4/5)

One of the best-documented waves, with military radar, a jet scramble and a public Air Force report.

Caveats

The Air Force concluded the evidence was 'insufficient to prove that there were real crafts in the air' that night. The best-known photo, from Petit-Rechain, was said by its maker in 2011 to have been fabricated. Brian Dunning argued the November lights were a helicopter, and some scientists suggest mass hysteria, which General De Brouwer rejects.
