May 1989 · Las Vegas, Nevada (KLAS-TV) · Media disclosure · Secondary sources only
On 13 May 1989 KLAS-TV reporter George Knapp aired an interview with a man, face hidden, using the name 'Dennis'. He said he had worked at a site called S-4 south of Groom Lake, where hangars built into a mountainside held nine flying saucers being taken apart to learn how they worked. He later went public as Bob Lazar. The interviews drew worldwide attention to Area 51.
Why it matters (3/5)
Founding story of the Area 51 reverse-engineering narrative; the claims are widely disputed.
Caveats
Critics, including people in the UFO community, think he made the story up, and KLAS itself notes holes in his background that have never been filled. He has offered no physical evidence.
