A French farmer reports a landed craft and two small beings in his field

July 1, 1965 · Valensole, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence · Sighting · Secondary sources only

At about 5:30 am on 1 July 1965, farmer Maurice Masse heard a whistle and found a dark, rugby-ball-shaped craft on six legs in his lavender field, with two small figures in white suits. He said one pointed a tube at him and he was paralyzed for minutes until the craft took off. Gendarmes judged him sincere and recorded a shallow depression about 1.2 m across with a central hole and four grooves; later analysis found abnormally low calcium in the soil.

Why it matters (3/5)

France's best-known landing report, still cited for the marks reportedly left in the soil.

Caveats

Many onlookers trampled the site before the gendarmes arrived, and Masse was the only witness. He rejected a helicopter explanation. No agency ever published a detailed investigation.
