Rocket-shaped objects reported over Sweden and Scandinavia

May 1946 – December 1946 · Sweden (reports concentrated across the country) · Sighting · Secondary sources only

In summer 1946 Swedes and Norwegians reported fast rocket- or bomb-like objects, some said to crash into lakes. Reports grew from about 30 by 8 July to some 250 on 9 July, and peaked between 9 and 12 July at about a hundred a day, with another surge around 11 August. Sweden formed an investigating committee on 10-11 July, and the defense staff asked papers not to publish crash locations. The US Central Intelligence Group sent a report on the rockets to the President.

Why it matters (4/5)

Largest European wave of reports before 1947, with official military investigation and Allied attention.

Caveats

Swedish officials said many reports were explainable and did not reject meteors. Press at the time suspected Soviet tests of captured German V-weapons, which was never shown. Some reports had ordinary causes, such as an airliner testing landing lights. Counts here come from a private monograph built on press reports, not from Swedish records.
