A wave of 'mystery airship' reports sweeps California and then the American Midwest

November 17, 1896 – June 1897 · United States (California, then the Midwest and Texas) · Sighting · Secondary sources only

From 17 November 1896, after the Sacramento Bee printed a telegram saying an airship would fly to California, hundreds of people in Sacramento reported lights in the night sky, followed by San Francisco and Oakland. A second wave from January to May 1897 moved east from Nebraska through Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin to the northeast coast. Bartholomew estimates up to 100,000 alleged sightings from more than 1,000 newspaper stories.

Why it matters (3/5)

The first large American wave of reports of unexplained craft in the sky, set against heavy newspaper coverage and public interest in flight.

Caveats

Bartholomew says newspapers printed speculative and invented stories, and that some reports involved balloons and photographs he describes as faked. Bartholomew attributes the wave to collective wish-fulfillment, rumors of a secret inventor and misperceived stars, planets and fire balloons. No one ever claimed an airship, which some found suggestive.
